How Help for Heroes Offers Support for Service Personnel

How Help for Heroes Offers Support for Service Personnel

Help for Heroes is a household name; famous for being one of the UK's largest service charities and providing support for service personnel who have been injured, sick or wounded in the line of duty. But that is where many people's understanding of Help for Heroes ends. With incredible earnings of over 125 million in just 4 years, how does the charity spend donations?

Some of Help for Heroes' biggest projects are Personal Recovery and Assessment Centres (PRACs), which serve the charity's principal purpose of providing care and support for service personnel. Once the wounded have been rehabilitated back to health at Headley Court, PRACs serve the function of providing aftercare through their holistic life skills course and fun activities to get the wounded, sick and injured back into what they enjoy doing most.

Help for Heroes works to provide and maintain five tri-service PRACs; in Tidworth, Colchester, Catterick, Plymouth and Edinburgh. The Defence Recovery Capability is a Ministry of Defence initiative, and they work with Help for Heroes and other service charities such as the Royal British Legion to provide a high level of care for members of the Armed Forces in these centres.

The flagship of Help for Heroes' five UK wide PRACs is Tedworth House, situated in the Garrison town of Tidworth in Wiltshire. Tedworth House is a facility which offers support for all service personnel, whether they are or were in the Army, Navy or RAF. Set in a stunning Grade 2 listed stately home, Tedworth has a pivotal role in the recovery process for members of the Armed Forces. It can accommodate over 50 residents and many more day visitors at any one time, providing facilities such as a state-of-the-art gym and once at a full operating capacity, it will offer a sports complex with specialist adapted equipment and a swimex, a range of courses, classes and trips offering help and education, and acting as a meeting point to promote socialising with other servicemen and women. Service personnel can seek lifestyle advice from trained professionals on money management, employment, relationships, housing and prosthetic limbs, among a huge range of other topics.

It cost Help for Heroes 17m to turn the stately home into the PRAC it is today. To understand the scale of the project, 6,300 miles of cabling were used throughout the house for power, telephones and computers and fire systems, 8 tonnes of Emulsion paint was used and over 6,500 items of furniture and other items have been identified and ordered. Despite this, the huge renovation project took just 16 weeks to complete, and it is expected that the house will be operating at full capacity by September 2012. 15 million has so far been funded to cover running costs for the next 10 years, enabling Help for Heroes and other service charities offer support until at least 2012.

Tedworth House is already one of Help for Heroes' proudest achievements and it wouldn't have been possible without the support from the fantastic British public. The venue will enable service personnel to become stronger, healthier and generally more inspired, and Help for Heroes is hoping that donations will allow them to continue their work, providing support for service personnel for many more years to come.

Home Employment - Your Eight Step Guide To Home Employment

Home Employment - Your Eight Step Guide To Home Employment

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Neither is there an easy way to earn money, especially from home. To make yourself employable, you need to ensure that you have the required skill sets as well as good marketing and interpersonal skills. A sound portfolio (for aspiring writers, editors, photographers, designers, etc.) is a must.

Today several private companies and MNCs are employing people who prefer working out of their homes. A host of opportunities exist for home employment in areas as diverse as telemarketing, selling insurance, data entry, typing, data conversion, copywriting, accounting , writing (academic and journalistic writing), editing and proof reading, web design, content development, Internet-based research for companies, graphic design and desktop publishing, programming, audio and video editing, translation work and etc is available.

With a fair bit of technology skills (typing and word processing skills, being PC literate), entrepreneurs can use the worldwide web to start companies and work from the convenience of their homes.

Before you get into the home employment groove, make sure you have the requisite qualifications, hardware, and time management skills to convince potential employers that you are the right person for the job.

Step 1: Make The Right Choices

Before you consider quitting your day-job or begin working from home, take a piece of paper and list out your skills, preferred areas of employment, and your comfort-level in each area. For instance, if you are a programmer, weigh the benefits of home employment versus working in a corporate environment. If you are a student, chart out your daily schedule and figure out how much time you can spare for a 'part-time' job, even if it doesn't involve stepping out of home.

Remember, you may or may not earn as much as you would in a full-time job, and freelance projects take time to source and payments are delayed, in some cases. Zeroing in on the right kind of job is important. Don't get stuck with a job you don't like.

Step 2: Set Up Your Workstation

Once you have narrowed down your choice of employment, you can set up your workstation. You need to make sure that your future work area is very comfortable - use ergonomic furniture, wherever possible.
For Writers/Editors: A fast PC is a pre-requisite, you may also have to install software such as MS Office/Open Office, QuarkXP-press or Adobe InDesign.

For Designers: Although it's not important to invest in a Mac (Apple Macintosh), make sure your PC has enough RAM (at least 1 GB), hard disk space, and install a good graphics card. You also need to install design software such as Adobe photoshop, 3D Studio Max, Quark, Corel Painter, or Adobe InDesign.

For Data Entry/Typing Assignments: A computer, MS Office/open Office, or other data-entry software.

For Medical Transcription: Medical transcription involves transcribing medical records dictated by doctors (patient history, records, notes, lab reports), usually located in clinics abroad. Basic requirements include a PC with about 40 GB hard disk space, 256 MB RAM (minimum), sound card and Internet access. You would also require headphones, word processing software, and a good dictionary.

Step 3: Prepare Your Portfolio:

Prepare a good resume, entering the right keywords under 'Objective'. Use sites like IT-people and Monster to get basic understanding of the job profile. Use Resume Builder on these sites (needs registration) and on MS Word.

Step 4: Set Up A Web Site or Blog

Create a good web site (one that's not too garish, text or image heavy).

If you are a freelance photographer or freelance programmer or freelance web designer or freelance graphic designer, put up thumbnails of your work on the site. You could also set up a web log (blog) on sites such as Blogger.com and LiveJournal.com. Don't forget to provide your e-mail address, resume, and contact details at a prominent location on the site.

Use the best search engines in the business Google, Yahoo!, MSN search, and the right keywords (freelance programming, freelance translation, freelance projects, Data entry, Freelance programmer, Freelancing, Freelancers, Freelance work, Custom web design, Outsource projects, Outsource work, and etc.) to find the jobs you want. Don't provide personal details while registering on a website unless it's absolutely essential.

Rent-a-coder.com, a freelance-sourcing site has a ranking system to rate the work of freelancer programmers, and help companies choose people best suited for a particular project. Elance.com, Guru.com, GetAFreelancer.com, Scriptlance.com, and Freelance Work Exchange are other popular freelance sites.

It's very, very important to 'connect' with the outside world. Join networking groups such as Friendster and Ryze , have your blog linked to blog rings, and enroll in forums, user groups and other specific online communities. Caveat-online communities have their own set of protocols and etiquette. Remember to follow the rules; don't forward your resume to everyone you meet.

Step 5: Create A Work Schedule And Meet Deadlines

Create a 'work culture' for your self. Just because there is no 'boss' breathing down your neck, you can't afford to slacken or miss deadlines. In fact, you have to work twice as hard to ensure that the companies/clients hiring you have absolutely no reason to regret employing a freelancer.

Step 6: Sell Yourself

Be your own Boss, and brand manager. While it's important to have an online presence in the form of a website or blog, it's equally important to be aware of competitive pricing and different payment strategies.

Do not charge your clients less because you are working from home. Make enquires pertaining to the market rates for a particular project (say, web-design or coding), and charge them accordingly. Also, do not under-rate or overrate your skills; and do not undersell or oversell yourself. Be as honest as far as possible.

Tip: To ascertain that Google throws up your site when users enter certain keyword, make the title of your webpage very specific (Fashion Photographer or Freelance Writer or freelance programming or Outsource work or as the case may be).

Ensure that your site linked to other prominent ones,by publishing research papers online, being part of active online communities or regularly updating your web log with quality content.

Step 7: Upgrade Your Skill-Sets

When you have time, enroll in training sessions, part-time diploma courses or distance education programs to upgrade your existing skill sets. With technological advancements, there will be rapid changes in the employment scenario as well.

The IT industry, for instance, is continuously evolving. You may have to invest in software courses, at least once every year, to learn new programming languages, improve your design and editing skills, and so on. Not upgrading your skills periodically would reduce your chances of employment, in any field.

Step 8: Exercise Regularly

As the maxim goes, health is wealth. Working from home may reduce your travel time but it might also bring to halt the little exercise you were getting earlier by walking to and from the train or the bus station. To ensure that you give your best to the projects you source, some physical exercise, yoga, and meditation sessions coupled with a balanced diet will help you stay mentally and physically in good shape.

A business plan gives an insight into the entrepreneur's ability to define and develop policies for the essential areas of the business. In my experience, the process of innovating and writing a plan is as precious as the product itself. This business document will map out the entire process by considering all the possible factors.

Listed below is a list of fuel fundamental factors that you will need to consider while creating your business plan:

1. Consultants and Backing Type: When you start creating a business plan, you must decide who will be reviewing it as this could help you form a great plan.
They might be variations in the business plan presentations for different people involved in your business. The presentation meant for the bank for loan purpose will be different when compared to the presentation that you give to your team.
Writing a business plan for investors includes an in-depth scrutiny with a detailed description of data to support your assumptions and risk management.

2. Business Plan Outline: Outlining the plan for your business is the second most vital point once you have targeted your audience. The target audience will determine the structure of your document.

3. Research and Information Collection: Once you have decided on the financial investment and its sources, it is time for research if you have not started it already.

Your approach from your work experience and observation will help you to research the market and the product.

Published information from library, internet and paid database services will inform you on the market growth, overall industry outlook and customer requirements. Field research will help you in covering interviews with customers, suppliers, competitors, and industry experts.

4. Collection Files: You will need to sum up all your experiences, interviews, and research in files for your plan analysis.

5. General Industry Overview: You will need to have a general understanding of the industry and the knowledge about the various strategies and services that apply in developing your business.

6. Analysis: Once you collect the data, you will need to analyze the process of building an aggressive profile, a comprehensive plan and consider the risks involved with it.

7. Executive Summary: When you have thoroughly completed all the segments of business plan, you need to write an executive summary highlighting the key points and including the loan repayment methods and return on your investments.

8. Review and Editing: Remember that a well-written business plan opens the doors to success. It will become your road map to success, which guides you in the right direction. Therefore, make sure that you proofread and check it a number of times before you decide on your final copy.

Home based business planning is not easy but by following these important steps of writing a business plan, you will be on your way towards success.

HISC5 of A Typical Middle Class Person

HISC5 of A Typical Middle Class Person

"HISC5" describes the main elements a middle class person is living for. These 8 basic elements that make up the life of the middle class are:

House - this is our shelter, our home, where our family live and rest. For most people, it is also one of the largest expenses they've spent in their lifetime. Middle class like us always strive to earn a better life, and our house can always reflect our living taste from this endeavour.

Insurance - this is a necessity nowadays, we just can't escape from it. When we own a car, auto insurance is compulsory before the car can go on road. When we mortgage our house, the bank always make fire insurance a must. When we work for a company, we are somehow insured as part of the benefit package, covering medical, hospitalization, accident, life, etc. And most middle class purchases some insurance products - medical card, whole life, investment linked, education, endowment, annuity, ... just to name a few.

Spouse - this is our lifetime partner which light up our lives. Lives would be somehow incomplete without the involvement of spouse. Your voyage shouldn't be alone without a companion.

Children - your offspring which grows your family tree, bring you joy, bring you fun, and sometimes bring you anger too. You nurture them, see them grow and develop. Together with your spouse, they make up what you call a family. And living together in your house, making a home sweet home.

Career - this is the successive course that make up your working life, enable you to contribute your skillsets, bring you remunerations, build your professionalism, develop your reputation, and so on.

Car - this is the piece of metal with roof, seats and wheels which enable you and your family to travel around, seek for foods, visit to places, and go to work. It shelters you from rain and sun, even protects you to certain extend in case accident happened. Your family lives would be much more fantastic with it, especially during your vacation.

Credit card - this plastic card is convenient, for you to pay bills online, act as deposit mechanism to check in hotels, substitute your cash to buy things, and earn you some points for reward redemption. When used with care, it also helps you to build up your credit integrity, useful when you apply for loan.

Cash - you need this current assets to maintain all the above, and you should make your cash work hard for you to grow more and counter inflation.

Your social status is pretty much measured by your "HISC5", but there is something much more important that forms the underlying foundation to all of them. Can you guess what is that? Yes, it is your health. The 8 elements above are basic that make up your life as middle class, and health is the essential element for all classes of mankind. Of course, there are other elements which are equally important as well, such as parents, brothers, sisters, neighbours, bloggers, relatives, friends, pets, etc.

Since these are the basic elements in our life voyage, you will notice that the sharing in my blog are encompassed with these "HISC5+health".

Heightened Perception

Heightened Perception

I walked into a warmly lit room in the company headquarters. The space was long and rectangular. In the center of the room was a very expensive timber and glass coffee table. The whole place had the scent of prestige, money and power. If this room had a name, it would have been known as "The special meeting room to impress people." If you worked for this company, this would be the room you would aspire to be in. Around the coffee table were thick, luxurious lounge chairs, and on these were seated the chief executives of the company.

I had been asked into the company headquarters as a consultant. I hadn't been given any information on the company's financial position. All I had been told was that the company was looking to expand their horizons and develop their people. After I was formally introduced, the conversation moved to where the company saw itself heading and the bright prospects that the future could bring.

I knew from past experience that nothing really changes in life, business or relationships until you get to the truth. It seemed that this particular meeting was just going around in circles.

Finally I leaned forward in my chair and said, "Look, if it's okay with you, I'd like to cut straight to the chase." I looked directly at the Chief Accountant. "I bet if I looked at your books, I would find that if this company doesn't do something drastic in the next few years, you will be in liquidation."

An immense silence filled the room. The accountant looked at me in amazement and said, "Yes, that's true. How did you know that?"

"I felt it," I replied.

The accountant, puzzled, gently shook his head and said, "Well how do you do that?"

I looked at him and replied, "How do you not do that?" What I meant was that this ability is a natural part of our makeup. We naturally have the ability to sense things but at some point many of us turn this sensibility off.

A few weeks later I was working with one of the Chief Executives in her office when she asked me, "Brendan, I notice that on many occasions you seem to have this uncanny ability to read situations and people like a book. You seem to know people's deepest thoughts. I feel that I lack that insight and it is limiting me in my life and career. How do you do it?"

"Okay," I replied, shifting in my chair to directly face her. "I want you to look at the desk and describe to me one object that is on the table."
After she described a pen to me, I asked, "So how do you know it's there?
"I can see it," she replied.
"So," I continued. "You trust what you see don't you? That's the first step in accessing your intuition or your knowing you need to trust it as much as you trust all your other senses. If you heard a loud crash outside in the street you would have absolutely no doubt you heard it, so why doubt your intuition? When you awaken your Sage it is like turning on another one of your senses. Just like you trust what you see, hear and smell, you learn to trust what you feel. Imagine walking around constantly doubting what you see. Imagine how confusing that would be. Well, it's also confusing when you doubt what you feel."

She nodded in quiet, thoughtful agreement before I continued. "You see, your intuition is like a friend. If you have a friend that constantly gives you advice that you never heed, what will your friend do?"

"They will either go away or keep quiet," she answered. "Exactly," I replied. "If you listen to your intuition and follow it, then that friend actually becomes stronger and more powerful. It becomes a very powerful ally."

BEYOND DOUBT

The biggest enemy of intuition is doubt. As Shakespeare said, "Our doubts are traitors." One kind of doubt is where you receive a strong intuition to go in a certain direction and then doubt its validity. I have lost count of the number of times people have told me how they acted against their intuition and as a consequence have had major learning experiences.

Another kind of doubt is where intuition itself is regarded as irrational and unscientific. When people refer to the god of science as being the paragon of rationale, I often remind them of Einstein's words, "I have not arrived at my understanding of the universe by means of the rational mind."

The rational mind is very important. We use it to do our taxes, figure out road maps and a host of other useful things. The rational mind provides us with clear thinking, which is essential in problem solving. This ability to think clearly is the most elementary level of the Sage. However, beyond this is a world that the rational mind cannot penetrate.

Some people hold the view that they can only believe in things that they can touch, hear and see. Yet science itself estimates that there is less than one billionth of our reality that can be recognized by our physical senses. A dog, for example, has a certain range of hearing that we do not posses. What we see is just a tiny fraction of what is actually there. In fact, the eye is a lens which perceives the world upside down. Our brain then turns the image the right way up. Our physical senses register only a narrow bandwidth of physical reality.

The rational mind is crucial to negotiate the problems of the world, however, it has its limitations. The intuitive mind knows. The rational mind thinks it knows. Intellectual understanding can only take you so far. You can study everything about the taste of chocolate but until you actually eat chocolate you will never truly know what it tastes like. When Carl Jung was asked if he believed in God he answered, "I don't believe in God. I know."

If you would like to awaken a higher level of perception, begin to trust those intuitive messages. Know that who you really are is more powerful and extraordinary than any of us can possibly imagine.

was pre-ordained for greatness following his graduation from Harvard College in 1968. Here he developed a fondness for the written word and the rolling printing presses in the hallowed halls of The Harvard Crimson. Not content with an undergraduate degree of such esteem and bound by the centripetal force of Harvard Yard, further burnished his resume with a stint at Harvard Law School. Here, he was further able to satiate his appetite for writing by serving as Supreme Court Note Editor of the Harvard Law Review.

After law school, served as a clerk first to Chief Judge David L. Bazelson and then to Mr. Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. of the United States Supreme Court. But quickly realized that such a traditional post law school career path did not befit a man of his stature and abilities. He made a return to academia by joining the faculty of the Michigan Law School in 1974. Within the short span of 8 years, would scale the ranks from assistant professor to associate professor to full professor, a testament to his ambition and dedication.

Most of us would have our hands full attempting to attain full professorship in such a tight time span, but found time even in 1980-81 to take a leave of absence from academia and serve as Counselor on International Law in the Office of the Legal Adviser of the US Department of State. The crowning achievement of this stint was the establishment of a US-Iran Claims Tribunal charged with adjudicating claims between Iran and the United States under the settlement that freed the US Embassy hostages.

In the following years, was able to sample a range of professional and academic jobs given that he was flooded by a wealth of relevant offers. He spent some time in the law firm of Califano, Ross and Heineman. Come January 1983, decided to make a shift to Dewey Ballantine where he was offered the position of partner. Within this period, he was able to cultivate his passion for academia by teaching through the Georgetown University Law Center where he was recognized as Distinguished Visitor From Practice in1986-87. He was also able to fit in a summer of teaching at the University of Texas Law School in the summer of 1978.

But a man with the breadth of achievements of obviously does not believe in constraining himself to an area of specialization. It was in this period that came the dawn of the Internet age and the entire world was obsessed with computers and how they could transfer our lives and how we conducted commerce.

Computer companies were increasingly entangled in complex regulatory and business issues and scanned the horizon for the smartest people around to help them navigate unfamiliar waters. It was in such an environment that was intrigued enough by the technological landscape to be lured away from Dewey Ballantine to the headquarters of Computer Associates International in Islandia, New York. entered the company as Senior Vice President and General Counsel. Flexible Employee Benefits

Flexible Employee Benefits

Employee benefits cover a wide range of offers, from cost-effective insurance policies to special discounts. Both employees and employers have long realized the advantages of offering a range of flexible benefits in addition to their financial compensation, or in exchange for a partial salary sacrifice. Despite that, most of them have not yet been able to take advantage of the full potential offered by these programs.

In many cases, neither party knows exactly how much value can be added to their payment depending on their current situation. The easiest solution to that problem is to seek a professional employee benefit provider with years of experience in the industry for a consultation, but you can find some useful information just by reading this article.

Utilizing the Whole Range of Employee Benefits

The most common criticism of the benefit program is a loss of value when compared to monetary salary. If thats true of your workplace, then it has not been applied correctly. Finding a benefit package that suits the employee and employer equally can be likened to hitting a jackpot, because it will be present for the entire duration of the employment.

The key to finding the right combination of offers concerns products and services which employees already purchase, but would be able to acquire with greater cost efficiency both to themselves and the company. Thats why so much time is spent on coming up with flexible benefits that can be further customized by each individual who receives them.

As a result, the employer doesnt have to face the impossible task of appealing to everyone with the same package. Instead, the recipients themselves can assume partial control over the package selection. To streamline the process and utilize an existing network of employee benefit providers, they usually turn to established companies such as Fair Care.

Maximizing the Value of Benefit Packages

Both employees and employers who have not yet taken full advantage of a flexible benefit package often wonder about its effectiveness and actual usefulness to their professional and personal lives. While the benefits of typical health insurance policies are rarely argued against, less popular but equally valuable employee benefits are often overlooked in favor of traditional salary increases.

This passive course of action may save managers and their subordinates from some minor confusion in the short term, but ultimately prevents both parties from extracting maximum value out of their positions at the company. After all, the process of transferring to a flexible benefit program can take a lot of time without proper guidance, and the number of obstacles increases for small businesses that dont have any room for experiments.

For that very reason, employers and employees opt for professional service providers with established connections to walk them through all the necessary steps as fast as possible and without additional expenses. Usually, these are service providers that specialize in providing a very varied range of offers. By visiting their website, you can learn more about their most popular and cost-effective employee benefits.
